This is Africa

This is my 4th time here in South Africa and the best time I've ever had on any of my vacations. Jo'burg & Soweto were cool, but can't top Cape Town. This city is so beautiful-Table mountain, blue water beaches, Victorian architecture. Cape Town is on fire! I think my sister and I spent half of our time here in a drunken stuppor. I'm so ready to expatriate. I've tried to document all of my experiences here, but there are just too many of them. The people here are so nice & warm & eager to tell you their story of their South Africa.

New Year's Eve

During the day, our crew pretty much split up and went about the city & met up at Green Market for lunch. I went to the Slave museum which is housed in the VOC's (Dutch East India Trading Company) slave lodge. The Dutch found resistance w/ enslaving the indiginous population and also found the natives to be more useful as bartering partners. Therefore, The VOC enslaved peoples from East,West, & Central Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, & Madagascar to work in the Cape Colony.

At 10pm, we all went down to Long st which is basically a mash up between Adams Morgan & Dupont. We went to our favorite spot, Jo'burg. The party was still going strong at 4:30am, but we had to leave for my brother & I had to be back at our hotel by 5:30am to catch our early flight back to Johannesburg. My brother is actually going to stay in South Africa until September. So basically we got back just in time to pack our last things & hop in the shower. I have yet to sleep. I'll probably catch some Zzs on the 18 hour flight back. Oh, and we have to wait at the Johannesburg airport for 8 hours to depart. So I'm basically looking at 24+ hours of travelling.

Top of the world

Sunday we went to Table Mountain. My mother is afraid of heights, we had to do a lot of convincing. In order to reach the top of the top, you have to take a cable car which as kinda scary. We made my mom stand in the middle. There are 2 windows on the cable "pod" and the floor rotated so that everyone received a panoramic view. The view from the top was amazing. It was like an out of body experience being so high up. I actually could look down on the clouds.

Saturday recap

Now that Dumile is here, we all went to Camps Bay beach. My sister entered the Playgirl competiton and won 1st place! After the beach, everyone took naps and then went to the V&A Waterfront. Oh, Carolyn apologized and now every one is cool. My mother and brother decided to return home while myself, cousin & sister decided to prowl the streets.

First stop, Fashion TV club. Our cab driver was such an asshole. He charged us R30 for a 2 minute ride & didn't even drop us off at the right place. We went into some club called Lotus which was actually a gay club. Someone pointed us in the direction of the club which was 3 blocks away. Fashion TV was cool but it was packed. Dumile's distant cousins came to the club and took us out to a strip club called House of Rasputent. It was a female strip club & very classy. There was no tipping which I thought was weird. There was this one stripper that did alot of acrobatic stuff. We later learned that she was a gymnist.

Dumile's here

Our cousin Dumile arrived yesterday and she pressured me into going out. Well, I actually didn't need much cohersing-I made my brother & her do shots of Absinthe before we left. We went to Long st where one of Dumile's distant cousins met us. He as going to a club called Deluxe which played what's considered real house music. It was ok, well we really didn't like it. Dumile's cousin took us to a cheap bar that was playing really fast Techno music. I had another shot of Absinthe which the bartender lit for me. We went back to Club Jo'burg and the shots continued. It was fun.

Dri Buddi

I saw an infomercial yesterday for a portable clothes dryer called a Dri Buddi. It's basically a large blowdryer at the base of a stand w/ a bag around it. I was in awe & a bit hungover. I bought it today & went to a nude beach.

Absinthe!!!!!

Is awesome! Tonight we went to a club called Hemisphere on the 31st floor of the ABSA bank building. It was cool. The dj played a lot of hip hop & house. One of my sister's new found friends was to ae us to a dancehall club on long st as well as another club where his friend was djing. The guy kept stalling so i kept drnking to pass the time. I noticed that a lot of the german tourists where drinking these lime green shots & then I realized that it was Absinthe. I decided to get one myself. I was expecting a very harsh liquor but was shocked to find Absinte very smooth. It tasted like liquorice (sp). It got straight to he point. I had obviously been wasting my time (& palette) w/ mixed drinks. I had 2 hots on top of the 3 mixed drinks I had. I did not see the green fairy though. I wonder how much you have to drink for that to happen.

The night ended at a club called Marvel on long st. They played mostly hip hop & dancehall. I have the hiccups now.
